Typhoid Vaccine Now Available in Japan

Japan has its first approved typhoid fever vaccine: Typhim Vi® Injection Syringe (Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine).

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It spreads through contaminated food or water and causes high fever, headache, fatigue, and diarrhea. Severe cases can lead to dangerous complications such as intestinal bleeding or perforation. The disease is common in parts of South and Southeast Asia with limited sanitation. Most cases in Japan (20–30 per year) are imported from travel.

The vaccine is given as a single 0.5 mL injection (muscle or subcutaneous). It is recommended for travelers to high-risk areas by WHO, CDC, and other health authorities. Consult a doctor or travel clinic before your trip.
