To optimize protection against mosquitoes and reduce the risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases:

#1. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and socks. Repellents used on skin can also be applied to clothing. But must be reapplied after laundering.
#2. Apply lotion, liquid, or spray repellant to exposed skin. Ensure adequate protection during times of day when mosquitoes are most active. Dengue, yellow fever, West Nile, and chikungunya vector mosquitoes bite mainly from dawn to dusk. Malaria and Japanese encephalitis vector mosquitoes bite mainly from dusk to dawn.
#3. Use common sense. Keep windows closed and use a mosquito net when necessary!

Are you experiencing seasonal allergies?

Japanese cedar “sugi” (Cryptomeria japonica) is one of the major causes of seasonal allergies. Its pollen is one of the most potent known and may cause severe symptoms; stuffy and/or runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing. In Tokyo, one out of four people are believed to suffer from this allergy. The pollens are typically present from the end of January until May. Residents of Tokyo who have been exposed are at higher risk of developing seasonal allergies.
